\u269c\ufe0fAlexander III of Macedon (Ancient Pella, July 23, 356 BC \u2013 Babylon, June 10, 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great or Alexander the Great, was a Greek king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. He succeeded his father, Philip II, to the throne in 336 BC at the age of 20 and spent most of his reign conducting a long military campaign throughout Western Asia and Egypt. By the age of 30, he had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered to be the greatest and most successful general in history.<\/em><\/p>\n

He was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. In 332 BC, shortly after assuming the kingship of Macedonia, he campaigned in the Balkans and seized control of Thrace and parts of Illyria before marching on the city of Thebes, which was subsequently destroyed in battle. As a Macedonian, he was conscious of his Greek origins, and led the Panhellenic League, using his power to launch the pan-Hellenic plan envisioned by his father; in the process assuming the leadership of all Greeks in the conquest of Persia.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 337 BC, he invaded the Achaemenid Persian Empire and began a series of campaigns that lasted 11 years. After conquering Asia Minor, Alexander broke the Achaemenid power in a series of decisive battles, including those at Issus and Gaugamela. He then overthrew Darius III and conquered the entire Achaemenid Empire. After the fall of Persia, the Macedonian Empire held a vast strip of land between the Adriatic Sea and the Indus River. Alexander sought to reach “the ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea” and invaded India in 327 BC. , achieving a significant victory over Porus, an ancient Indian king of present-day Punjab, at the Battle of the Hydaspes.<\/em><\/p>\n

Due to the demands of his troops, he eventually retreated back to the Hyphasis River and later died in 323 BC in Babylon, the Mesopotamian city he had planned to establish as the capital of his empire. Alexander the Great’s death left unexecuted a further series of planned military and commercial campaigns that would begin with a Greek invasion of Arabia. In the years following his death, a series of civil wars broke out throughout the Macedonian Empire, ultimately leading to its dissolution at the hands of the successors.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
