About Pegasus Pegasus (or Pegasus) is a winged horse from Greek mythology born to Poseidon and born from the severed throat of the mermaid Medusa, who was killed by Perseus. He was Chrysaor’s brother, born in a single litter when his mother was beheaded by Perseus. It is a winged divine stallion usually depicted in pure white. Poseidon gave Pegasus to his son Bellerophon, who used Pegasus in his famous battle with the Chimaera. This fire-breathing creature was a formidable mix of a lion’s body with a snake for a tail and a goat’s head growing from its back. To help him in this task, Bellerophon was fortunate enough to have Pegasus at his disposal. In some accounts he found the horse in the fountain of Pyrrhines near Corinth, and Hesiod suggests that this event explains the name Pegasus, which comes from “water” – pēgē (fountain). Taming the horse with the help of Athena, Bellerophon rode (and threw) Pegasus and managed to kill the monstrous Chimaera with his spear. The symbolism of Pegasus varies with time. A symbol of wisdom and especially fame from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, it became a symbol of poetry and a source of inspiration for poets.
