“Poison” Ring with Leaves and Labradorite

A case ring worn in the Middle Ages, circa 16th century. This ring was used, either to hold poison that would be sprinkled into an enemy’s food or drink, or to facilitate the wearer’s suicide in order to escape capture or torture. Such rings have been used throughout history to carry poison, perfume, tufts of hair, cult relics, messages and other mementos, which is why they were also known by other names such as “Locket rings” or “Poison rings”. By the 17th century, jewelers were creating casket-shaped rings that served as mementos for the bereaved. These were called “funeral rings.” An exquisite, artistic, vintage silver ring, topped with a Labradorite gemstone.
