Carnelian was widely used during Roman times in the creation of engraved gemstones for signet rings used to set a wax seal onto mail or other important documents. Carnelian has the property of not sticking to hot wax. Sardian stone was used for Assyrian seal cylinders, Egyptian and Phoenician scarabs, and early Greek and Etruscan gemstones. Although it is the most common name for this stone today, the term “carnelian” is a 16th-century corruption of the 14th-century word “corneol” (and the related spellings corneline and carnelian).
