⚜️The Phaistos Disc is an enigma, a circular clay disc covered with inscribed symbols on both sides that do not resemble any signs in any writing system. It was discovered in the ancient city of Phaistos in South Crete in 1908. It is believed to date back to around 1700 BC (from relevant archaeological context). This object has been the subject of much study. Stephen Fisher claimed to have deciphered it and that it was a document in an archaic form of Greek. Because no other similar objects have ever been found anywhere in Crete, it is believed that the object was foreign and brought from elsewhere. Its place of origin is highly speculative, although subtle clues may be found in the disc’s highly pictorial markings. One tablet depicts a crested helmet, later used by the Philistines. Another tablet depicts a structure similar to the sarcophagus used by the Lycians of Asia Minor. Since there is virtually no variation between different copies of the same symbol, it is very likely that stamps were used to create these highly detailed tablets. Although not truly a printed work, some have characterized the Phaistos disc as the earliest typewritten work. It has been suggested that the number of distinct symbols on the disc is too few to be part of a purely pictorial system and too many to be an alphabet. This leaves the syllable as the most likely option – each symbol is a syllable and each group of symbols is a word. Indeed, this is the system of the later Mycenaean Linear B. However, in such systems, one would expect to find a reasonably uniform distribution of symbols within a given text, and this is not the case with the two sides of the disc each displaying an uneven distribution of some symbols.
